Form vs. Function. The eternal struggle of aesthetics in yo-yo design has been a make or break for so many in this day and age. But it’s never been a problem for Caribou Lodge YoyoWorks.

Chris Mikulin has created a look all his own. From the Peak to the Campfire, each piece he has done is a testament to thinking outside the box. While many companies center their brand identity around specific technologies or iconic axle tower forms, CLYW takes a more artistic approach. From the hand-stamped artwork by Jensen Kimmitt on each box to the unique anodizing processes adorning the body of the yo-yo, each yo-yo is a piece of artwork.

But there are also underlying nuances to Mikulin’s work on CLYW. Namely, the attention to detail in the forms. Everything is painstakingly refined and tweaked to visually flow. So many times the form of a yo-yo has to take second place to the functionality of the yo-yo in order to make it perform to the best of its abilities. But somehow CLYW has discovered the key to Form vs. Function and created a range worthy of awards, on and off the stage. The Sasquatch and Gnarwhal are no exception…

One thing I was very impressed with was CLYW still maintained the organic, smooth contours that they are known for, while introducing more of a modern, straighter silhouette.

Touching again on CLYW’s very organic approach to their yo-yos: the use of the small “step” and creating a more “hourglass” shape is really interesting.

Even with the very similar shape, these yo-yos play very differently. Chris and the CLYW crew have a lot planed for this pair. Something for everyone, no matter what your taste.
