Life on the Road

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Save Deth Life has been amazing the past 2 weeks. For me, I’ve been on the road for Duncan doing demos and teaching in Missouri, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. Traveling is one of the things in life that really gets me excited. Seeing places I’ve never seen, visiting places I’ve never been.

Colorado has been the most memorable place so far. I haven’t been there since I was 12 or so. Denver was actually the place I bought my first bearing yo-yo. Colorado is beautiful. Words and pictures can’t describe the grandeur of the Rockies. The other great thing was being able to spend time with Jen Kori and Jon Gates, two players I’ve wanted to get to know for way to long. Jon’s stories of the past 20 years of working in the yo-yo industry are always great. And hanging out till all hours of the night with Jen geeking out about yo-yo never gets old.

So as I sit half way across the country from home, surrounded by some of the best players in the world (Pat, Miggy, Kota, Yuuki, Gashek, Tyler, etc) Dave is settling into a whole new life as well. Marriage.

On September 20th, Dave and Mariah tied the knot. To be a part of such a happy day for two of my closest friends is an honor. Here’s to many great years and lots of memories.

Vintage Inspiration

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I have always been a fan of vintage yo-yo graphics. Something about them is just on point. Maybe its just nostalgic but Big G’s, Eagles, shields, and wings just seem so iconic.

So with that, I tried my hand at recreating a vintage logo for Save Deth. My process was pretty straight forward, I spent time pouring over pictures of old Duncan and Tom Kuhn yo-yos. Then I sketched up some ideas and got better acquainted with how it all “worked”. After that, I went into Illustrator and laid it all out.

Once the basic form is done up, I had to mess around with medians, spacing, positioning, and thickness. Thanks to Paul, Mark, Sid, and Brandon for the critical eye.

Now that it’s done, we’ve got some cool stuff in the works with it. I guess you’ll have to wait and see what we end up doing with it?

In other news, we have a Save Deth Facebook that we’ll be keeping you up to date with whats going on with us. So check it out, add us, it’ll be great!

Stories

The drive from Des Moines to Minneapolis is one I travel a lot. One of the things that breaks the flat rolling landscape of rural Iowa are “Wind Farms”. Huge fields of windmills jut from the ground like steel weeds. They’ve always fascinated me, looking so skinny and delicate yet standing up to so much force. Incredible.

Minnesota States was the destination of this trip. This year’s venue, Rosedale Mall, was also the host of my first freestyle back in 2001 at the Mid-Winter Yo-Yo Contest. 8 years later, I’m back to give it another try.

The night before the contest Josh Parker and his wife hosted a BBQ at their house. Brats, Hot Dogs and S’mores were devoured around the bonfire. After eating, Adam decided to take a little nap in a lawn chair. Forgetting that his feet were propped up by the fire, Adam soon awoke to the smell of burning rubber, and the bottom of his sole melting off.

Adam can pack down some White Castle. 9 sliders were no problem, until the ride home the next day. Lets just say I had to drive with the windows down most of the way. Ugg.

This is Matt. He’s been involved with the yo-yo scene in the Twin Cities for over a decade. Recently his mother was going through a box of his grandfather’s old belongings and came across this Duncan patch from 1937. Apparently he had been a childhood yo-yo champ, unbeknownst to Matt or the rest of the family. Carrying on past times 3 generations strong.

FlameBurger!

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Welcome to a Hilltop icon: Flameburger. Hilltop is a suburb 15 minutes north of downtown Minneapolis. We always make it a must stop because of a huge thrift store and John-Bot.

Open 24 hours a day, Flameburger is a much better late night dive than the White Castle down the road. Hilltop can be kind of a shady place, as you can tell by the sign that hangs on the front door.

Flameburger’s claim to fame is the “Double Mega FlameBurger”. It’s 4 HUGE patties with TONS of bacon and way to much cheese. If you eat it all you get a dope sticker and your picture on the wall. John-Bot is among them.
